The night Daniel left me at home for his brother’s engagement party, our bedroom smelled faintly of cedar from his suit jacket and the lemon polish I had used on the dresser that morning.

The lamps were warm.

Daniel stood in front of the mirror with one cufflink in his hand, trying to fasten it like the tiny piece of metal had suddenly become a moral test.

It slipped once.

Then again.

The quiet scrape of it against his shirt sounded louder than it should have.

I watched him from the dresser and knew, before he said a word, that his mother had already won the first round.

“What exactly did your mother say about me?” I asked.

Daniel’s shoulders tightened.

He did not turn around.

“She said it would be better if it stayed family only,” he said.

There it was.

Not a misunderstanding.

Not a seating problem.

Not a last-minute issue with the guest list.

A decision.

I looked at my husband’s reflection in the mirror and waited for him to hear himself.

He looked tired, handsome, guilty, and weak.

All four things can live in the same person.

“Family only,” I repeated. “Daniel, I have been your wife for four years.”
