Doña Lupita Ramírez had lived in colonia Narvarte long enough to know the sounds of the block by heart. Morning vendors, bicycle bells, barking dogs, pressure cookers, neighbors arguing over parking. Ordinary noise never scared her.

After Mariana’s divorce, the arrangement seemed practical. Mariana worked long shifts and trusted her father to care for Valentina after school. Family, she told herself, was safer than hiring strangers.

That trust came with objects: a spare key, a pickup authorization at school, a medical card, and permission to decide what Valentina needed when Mariana could not be there.

For months, nothing looked wrong from outside. Valentina still waved from the sidewalk. Don Roberto still bought fruit at the corner market. Mariana still came by tired but grateful, thanking her father for helping.

Then the bicycle disappeared.

At first, Lupita noticed only small changes. Curtains closed earlier. The girl no longer stopped by to ask for candy. The house seemed too clean, too sealed, as if someone had decided sunlight was a witness.

One Thursday afternoon, while folding towels near her window, Lupita glanced across the street and froze. Valentina was on the kitchen floor, hugging her knees, her face wet with tears.

Don Roberto stood over her with a kitchen knife in his hand.

On Tuesday, Lupita bought fresh conchas and crossed the street. The paper bag was still warm. Sugar stuck to one corner where steam had softened it.

Don Roberto opened the door only a few inches.

‘I brought sweet bread for Valentina,’ Lupita said. ‘I haven’t seen her in days.’

‘Thank you, Lupita,’ he replied. ‘She is sick. A bad flu. Better if she rests.’
