The first entry was simple: kitchen knife, child crying, Roberto said flu. The next entry named the closed curtains. Another described the purple sweater, the tangled hair, and the way Valentina ran inside when Lupita offered candy through the gate.

Then came the midnight thud. Lupita had been awake because fear changes the way a house sounds. The refrigerator hummed too loudly. The clock seemed to tick against her bones. Then a blunt impact traveled through the quiet street.

Roberto’s voice followed. “I told you to shut up.”
