Moisés Ferreira did not believe houses remembered people until he returned to the country home where Beatriz had died. For two years, he had treated the property like a locked drawer in his own chest.

Moisés crouched in front of them. His anger rose, then went cold. He imagined storming through the fields, shouting for whoever had left them there. He did not move.

“Tonight,” he said, “nobody is throwing you out.”

Julia did not believe him. Joana did, just enough to lift the spoon.

Night came quickly in the fields. The crickets started first, then the wind along the eaves, then the scrape of branches against the roof.

Moisés made two beds on the large sofa in the living room. He found clean T-shirts, warmed water, and pulled one of Beatriz’s old wool blankets from the cedar chest.

Julia refused to let go of Joana. Even asleep, her hand remained clenched in her sister’s shirt. Moisés sat across from them in the armchair and kept watch.
